Parenting is challenging, particularly when you are parenting a child from a hard place. Children from hard places include children who were born prematurely, have been abused and neglected, have been adopted internationally, and have special needs. This training will focus on understanding the meaning of child behaviors, the brain chemistry of a child from a hard place, and how to help these children (and your family) heal and connect. Participants will learn tools they can put into action with their children immediately.

Audience: Caregivers and professionals. This training is intended for caregivers who have achieved permanency for the children in their home and are no longer receiving services through child welfare. It is also intended for the professionals working with families caring for children with traumatic histories.

Note: This is an Introduction & Overview training prior to the following three (3) day training. You must attend the Introduction & Overview in order to attend the in-depth trainings. You also must attend all three (3) in-depth trainings to be eligible for ongoing services with the Post-Permanency Services and Support program, and to have a full understanding of TBRI® and its impact on the children you serve. Every day will begin at 9:00 AM and end at 3:00 PM, aside from the Introduction & Overview which will begin at 5:00 PM and end at 8:00 PM.

Finally: we do offer childcare for this training. Childcare registration is included in event registration. Please tell us all of the children that you will need child care for so that we have adequate staff.

About TBRI®:

Trust Based Relational Intervention® (TBRI®) is a parenting and intervention model developed by Dr. Karyn Purvis and Dr. David Cross at the TCU Karyn Purvis Institute of Child Development. TBRI® is based on a solid foundation of neuropsychological theory and research, tempered by humanitarian principles. It is a family-based intervention that is designed for children who have experienced relationship-based traumas such as institutionalization, multiple foster placements, maltreatment, and/or neglect.

Both Brooks Kaskela, MA, and Emma Vatsaas, MS, co-faciliators, have studied under Dr. Karyn Purvis and Dr. David Cross and their team at the TCU Karyn Purvis Institute of Child Development. The training will utilize the TBRI® curriculum developed by the Institute. Brooks and Emma have received advanced training regarding this curriculum and have been qualified as TBRI® Educators to present the content.
